Policy Issues

Farm Bill programs administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) help biodiesel and renewable diesel increase production and open new markets, through education of consumers and fuel retailers. Congress reathorized the Biodiesel Fuel Education Program and the Bioenergy Program for Advanced Biofuels in the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018; however, Congress did not provide mandatory funds for the education program.

NBB asks Congress to provide funding for both programs through annual appropriations.

As our members communicate with Members of Congress, USDA and other Washington policy makers, the media, and the public, NBB works with them to amplify these points:

  • Advanced biofuels like biodiesel and renewable diesel drive investment, job creation, and innovation in feedstock development. Every 100 million gallons of increased biodiesel production supports roughly 3,200 jobs.
  • With plants and markets across the country, the U.S. biodiesel and renewable diesel industry supports more than 60,000 U.S. jobs, paying $2.5 billion in annual wages. The industry generates more than $17 billion in economic activity each year.
  • Increased biodiesel and renewable diesel production levels support U.S. energy independence.
