Biodiesel and renewable diesel are better, cleaner fuels, made from an increasingly diverse mix of raw materials such as recycled cooking oil and animal fats as well as surplus soybean oil. As direct diesel replacements, they can be used in existing diesel
engines without modification. They are available today as an easy and cost-effective way to reduce carbon emissions in existing diesel vehicles.
Biodiesel has the capability to reduce carbon and greenhouse gas emissions from the heavy-duty and long-haul diesel and aviation sectors, where electrification is not a near term option.

NBB also works with federal agencies, such as USDA, to highlight biodiesel’s innovative role in addressing carbon emissions in the agriculture sector.

- Biodiesel made from renewable fats and oils lowers net lifecycle carbon emissions up to 86 percent compared to petroleum fuel.
- With sector-wide strategies to remove fossil fuels from electric generation and transportation, the biodiesel industry can become carbon neutral.
- Biodiesel reduces criteria air pollutants and tailpipe emissions that harm populations in congested areas and transportation corridors, producing a direct benefit to human health. This includes reducing
- unburned hydrocarbons by 67 percent,
- carbon monoxide by 48 percent
- polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by 80 percent,
- nitrated PAHs by 90 percent, and
- ozone potential of speciated hydrocarbons by 50 percent.
